As Harper Lee said “As a reader I loathe introductions... Introductions inhibit pleasure, they kill the joy of anticipation, they frustrate curiosity.“ So I'm just going to do a short introduction. Nelle Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird on July 11, 1960, a time when racial segregation and injustice were still everywhere, but the is set way back to the 30s, an even worse time for minorities Unlike almost the entire white American population, Harper Lee intended to express her stance against racism through her masterpiece by using racist and sexist symbolism that allowed her protagonist, Jean Louise "Scout" to grow as a person by being aware of the injustices that occurred just because people were women or black. In this essay I’m going to talk about Scout’s development as a person, taking into account how innocent she was at the beginning of the book, she being nine years old, and how at the end of the book, she being nine years old, she is already aware of the racism, sexism and classism present in Maycomb.
